Do you currently have business insurance? *

This tells us whether to review an existing policy or start from scratch.

Massage therapist insurance covers a practice whose entire product is hands on a client. The claims follow from that. A treatment that injures instead of helping, a contraindication that was not asked about at intake, an allegation about conduct or draping, and a set of client health records more sensitive than any booking list. Where you work matters as much as what you do, because a large share of Alberta therapists are mobile, home-based, or renting a room inside somebody else’s clinic, and none of those are covered by the clinic’s own policy. Velocity writes these for registered massage therapists, mobile and home-based practitioners, spa and salon treatment rooms, and multi-disciplinary clinics across Alberta.

Edmonton is a spread-out city, and a therapist covering home visits and corporate chair massage from Sherwood Park to the west end is doing a large part of the work outside the address on the policy. Two things follow. The treatment coverage has to extend to wherever you actually treat, not just the clinic, and the drive itself is business use, which a personal auto policy may not cover. Add a winter of icy parking lots with a table under one arm and the case for getting both right is not theoretical.

A massage therapy program is built on professional liability for the treatment itself and general liability for the room and the people in it. Coverage follows your table and equipment off site, and privacy coverage looks after the health records you keep.

Risks Edmonton massage therapists face.

These exposures come with the work, and in Edmonton the local risks sit on top. A generic small-business policy rarely covers all of them.

01

A treatment that injures the client

Deep tissue, sports and trigger point work applies real force to real tissue, and the results include severe bruising, rib and nerve injury, and aggravation of an existing condition. It is harm caused by the treatment, which is professional liability territory, and it is the claim this profession has most often.

02

A contraindication nobody asked about

Blood thinners, osteoporosis, recent surgery, pregnancy complications, deep vein thrombosis and uncontrolled blood pressure all change what is safe to do on a table. When something goes wrong afterwards, the first question is what the intake form asked and what the client wrote, and the second is whether the treatment matched it.

03

An allegation about conduct or draping

This is the exposure that shapes how insurers price the whole class, and it is the one therapists are least comfortable asking about. Policies differ in how they respond to allegations of this kind, including whether defence is provided and on what terms. Read that section specifically before you buy rather than assuming it works the way the rest of the policy does.

04

Working somewhere that is not your clinic

Home visits, corporate chair massage, events and treating out of a rented room all take you outside the address a policy was written for. Coverage that stops at a clinic door leaves the visit uninsured, and the clinic’s own policy does not extend to a contractor or room renter working inside it.

05

The table, the linens, and what heats them

Hot stones, hot towel cabinets and paraffin burn clients often enough that insurers ask about them by name. Add a table that fails under load, oil on a hard floor, and a client’s belongings in a room they cannot see from the table, and the ordinary premises claims are real too.

06

Health records and benefit-plan billing

A massage practice holds health history, treatment notes, and often the details used to direct-bill an extended health plan. Under Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) a breach that could cause real harm carries a duty to notify. This is health information rather than a phone list, which raises what that response costs.

07

Severe summer storms and hail

Central Alberta sits in one of Canada’s most active hail corridors, and Edmonton sees damaging summer thunderstorms, wind, and hail most years. The August 2019 Edmonton-area hailstorm caused about $90 million in insured damage, with grapefruit-sized stones and winds near 91 km/h. Roofs, signage, fleet vehicles, and stock are the common losses, which is why property and equipment coverage matter here.

08

Winter freeze and water damage

Long, cold winters make frozen and burst pipes, ice damming, and roof-load a real exposure for Edmonton commercial buildings. The January 2024 cold snap held Edmonton at -40 to -45°C for four straight days, and burst pipes are among the most frequent commercial property claims that follow. Sewer-backup and overland-water endorsements are worth confirming.

The Protection

Coverages we recommend.

01

Professional Liability

For when the treatment itself causes harm, whether that is an injury from deep tissue or trigger point work, an aggravated condition, or a missed contraindication. This is the centre of a massage program, and it is what the professional associations require their members to carry.

02

Commercial General Liability

For a client injured in your space instead of on your table, or whose property is damaged, with the legal defence included. It is also what a landlord, a clinic owner or a corporate client asks to see before you work on their premises.

03

Table, equipment, and linens

Your table, bolsters, stone warmer, cabinets, linens and treatment room contents, protected against fire, theft, vandalism and water damage. If you work off site, the wording has to follow the equipment and not the address, and that is not automatic.

04

Business interruption

This replaces lost income and keeps the rent paid when a covered loss closes the room. For a practice booked weeks ahead, the appointments lost during a closure do not come back later.

05

Commercial auto for a mobile practice

Driving to clients, corporate sites or events is business use, and a personal auto policy may not cover a claim that happens on the way to a paying appointment. If the table lives in your vehicle, it needs to be insured there too.

06

Cyber and privacy liability

Help with the cost of a breach of client health history, treatment notes and billing details, including notification, investigation and legal expenses under PIPA. Health information is the most sensitive data a small practice holds.

Coverages shown are general examples, not a description of any specific policy. Policy coverages widely vary and should be confirmed with your broker.

How Pricing Works

What drives your premium

  • The modalities you practiseRelaxation work, deep tissue and sports massage, and anything involving heat or tools sit at different points on the risk scale. The techniques you use are what the professional liability is rated on.
  • Where you treatA single treatment room, a room rented inside a clinic, a home-based practice and a mobile practice driving to clients are four different exposures, and the last one adds an auto question the others do not have.
  • Client volume and hoursTreatments per week is the cleanest measure of exposure in this profession, and it usually matters more to the price than revenue does.
  • Employees, contractors, or rentersA clinic with employed therapists is rated differently from one whose therapists are contractors or room renters, and in the second case each therapist generally needs their own coverage as well.
  • Equipment and off-site useTables, stone warmers and cabinets set the property figure, and whether that equipment leaves the premises decides whether the wording has to follow it.
  • Claims and complaint historyPrior treatment claims or conduct complaints move the price more in this class than a property loss would, because they speak to practice and not to premises.
  • Your Edmonton locationYour neighbourhood, the building you occupy, and the local exposures Edmonton sees factor into the property side of your premium.

Common Questions

Questions ownersreally ask.

Is massage therapy regulated in Alberta, and does that change my insurance?

Massage therapy is not currently a government-regulated profession in Alberta, and the “RMT” title is not currently protected, though an application to regulate it is under government review. In the meantime the major associations typically require their members to carry professional liability insurance, and clinics and extended health plans usually require it too. Regulation or not, it is the coverage that pays for the claim this profession really has.

I rent a room in a clinic or work as a contractor. Am I covered by their policy?

Generally no. A clinic owner’s policy is written for the clinic and the people it employs. A contractor or room renter is running their own practice inside someone else’s space, which means your treatments and your equipment are your own risk. Clinic owners should require proof of each therapist’s coverage and keep the certificates current, because an uninsured contractor’s claim tends to arrive at the clinic instead.

Am I covered treating clients in their homes, at an office, or at an event?

Only if the policy is written to include it. Coverage often defaults to the address on the declarations, which leaves home visits, corporate chair massage and event work outside it. Tell us where you treat, including how far you travel and whether you use your own vehicle to get there, and we will make sure the wording follows the work and not the address.

What happens if a client alleges improper conduct?

It is the allegation every therapist fears, and it is the part of a massage policy worth reading before you need it. Policies differ in how they respond to allegations of this kind, including whether legal defence is provided and under what conditions, so ask that question specifically when you are comparing quotes. Alongside it, consistent draping practice, clear consent before working an area, and treatment notes written the same day are the things that protect a practice in practical terms.

Is my table covered if it is stolen from my car?

Not automatically. Equipment away from your premises, and particularly equipment in a vehicle, is frequently limited or excluded unless the policy is written to include it. A mobile practice needs the property wording to follow the table, with the vehicle question dealt with separately, since a personal auto policy may not respond to a loss on the way to a paying appointment.

How much does massage therapist insurance cost in Edmonton?

There is no flat rate. Your premium depends on the work you do, your revenue, your Edmonton location, and your claims history, and higher-risk work costs more to insure. We price it around how you operate rather than a one-size quote, and most massage therapists go from first conversation to bound coverage within a few business days.

What insurance do most Edmonton businesses need?

Most start with commercial property for the building, stock, and equipment, and commercial general liability for third-party injury and property damage. From there it depends on the trade: vehicles add commercial auto, contractors add tool and equipment coverage, retailers and offices add crime and cyber, and landlords add loss of rental income. We build the mix around your operation.

Are you a local Edmonton insurance broker?

Yes. Velocity is an Edmonton-based brokerage serving businesses across the region and the wider province. You work directly with a broker who knows the local market rather than a call centre.

Can you review my current policy before I switch?

Yes, and there is no obligation. Send us your current policy and a broker will review your coverage for gaps and overlaps and let you know whether we can improve the protection, the price, or both.
