A few details is all we need. Your broker follows up personally, usually within one business day.
Hair salon insurance covers the risks that come with chemical services and a room full of water, heat and people. Colour, bleach and relaxers can burn a scalp or break hair that took years to grow, and the claim that follows is about the service you performed, not about someone tripping on a cord. That is professional liability, and a general-liability policy on its own will not cover it. Around that sit the shampoo bowls and back bar plumbing that flood the suite below you, the hot tools left on a station, the shears and stock worth replacing after a break-in, and the weeks of lost bookings while the space dries out. Velocity writes these programs for full-service salons, colour studios, blow-dry bars, and the stylists renting chairs inside them.
A large share of Calgary's salons sit on the main floor of inner-city mixed-use buildings, Kensington and Inglewood among them, with tenants living directly above and beside them. That changes which claim hurts most: not the slip by the door, but the back bar. Shampoo bowls and their supply lines run all day against the busiest wall in the suite, and an overnight failure is both a property loss of your own and a liability claim from the neighbour whose ceiling came down. Ask how old the plumbing behind your wash stations is before your landlord does.
A hair salon program is built around professional liability for the chemical services and general liability for the floor. Contents coverage looks after tools, stock and your leasehold improvements, and business interruption carries you through the weeks the chairs are not earning.
Risks Calgary hair salons face.
These exposures come with the work, and in Calgary the local risks sit on top. A generic small-business policy rarely covers all of them.
A colour or chemical service that goes wrong
Bleach, permanent colour, relaxers and perm solution can burn a scalp, blister a hairline or break hair off at the root, and reactions happen even when the product is mixed and timed correctly. The claim is about the service itself, which professional liability covers and a general-liability policy generally will not.
The colour correction nobody wants to pay for
A colour that goes wrong rarely ends with the appointment. The client wants the correction, the extensions or the treatments to repair it, and sometimes the money back on all of it. These are financial claims and not injuries, and how a policy responds depends on wording, so it is worth reading before you need it.
Water damage from the back bar
Shampoo bowls, back bar plumbing and the hot water lines feeding them run all day, and a supply line that lets go overnight can take out your floor and the tenant below you. Escape of water is one of the most common commercial property claims there is, and in a salon it is plumbed into the busiest wall in the building.
Heat, and what it sits on
Flat irons, curling wands, dryers and processing lamps run hot all day beside aerosol product and paper. A tool left on after close is a real fire cause. The claim is not only your suite but the smoke damage to everything on the shelf and the neighbours on either side.
Damage to what a client brought in
Bleach on a coat, colour on a wedding dress, or a wand burn on a phone screen are small claims that arrive often, and without coverage that damage to a third party’s property comes straight out of the till.
Booth renters, and who the claim lands on
Most Alberta salons run some mix of employed, commissioned and chair-renting stylists, and that mix decides who is insured for what. The salon’s policy generally protects the salon, not the independent stylist renting the chair. A renter without their own coverage becomes the salon owner’s problem the day something goes wrong.
Hail, among the costliest in Canada
Calgary lies in Canada’s most active hail zone, known as "hailstorm alley." The August 2024 Calgary hailstorm caused roughly $3.3 billion in insured damage, the costliest hailstorm in Canadian history and the second-costliest natural disaster in the country after the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, and the June 2020 storm before it cost about $1.2 billion. Roofs, exteriors, fleet vehicles, and outdoor stock are the exposures, so replacement-cost property and comprehensive auto coverage matter.
Overland flood and water damage
The 2013 southern Alberta flood remains one of Canada’s costliest natural disasters, and Calgary’s river valleys keep overland flood and sewer backup on the map. These are typically endorsements, not automatic, so it is worth confirming your building and business-interruption coverage would respond.
The Protection
Coverages we recommend.
Professional Liability
For when the service itself causes the harm, whether that is a chemical burn, a reaction to colour, hair breakage, or a treatment that damages what a client came in with. On a hair salon this is the coverage doing the most work, and it is the one a general-liability policy will not stand in for.
Commercial General Liability
For a client or a member of the public injured in your space, or their property damaged, with the legal defence that comes with it. Retail product you sell off the shelf is usually picked up here too. Most landlords require it before they hand over keys.
Contents, tools, and stock
Your shears, clippers, dryers, chairs, colour bar, retail inventory and the leasehold improvements you paid for, protected against fire, theft, vandalism and water damage. Salon build-outs cost far more than most owners insure them for, so the improvements figure is worth setting deliberately.
Business interruption
This replaces lost income and keeps paying rent and payroll while a covered loss has your chairs closed. A flooded back bar can take weeks to dry, repair and re-inspect, and a booked-out salon loses that revenue permanently.
Crime and theft
Money, and losses from employee theft or fraud, which a property policy alone may not fully cover for a walk-in business taking cash and cards all day.
Cyber and privacy liability
Help with the cost of a breach of your booking system or client records, including notifying clients, the investigation and legal expenses. Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) puts that duty on you, not on the booking platform.
Coverages shown are general examples, not a description of any specific policy. Policy coverages widely vary and should be confirmed with your broker.
How Pricing Works
What drives your premium
- Your chemical service mixA salon doing full-head bleach, colour correction and chemical straightening prices differently from a blow-dry bar or a cut-only shop. The menu is the single biggest driver.
- Chairs, staff, and revenueMore stations and more stylists mean more client interactions and more chances for a claim, and revenue is the figure most insurers rate the liability side on.
- Employees, commission, or chair rentalHow your stylists are engaged changes who carries the exposure and how the policy has to be structured. Tell us the real mix. A policy written on the wrong assumption is the one that argues at claim time.
- Your build-out and stock valuesColour bars, custom millwork and a stocked retail wall set the property side. Leasehold improvements are the number most salons underinsure.
- Claims historyA clean record lowers your price. Prior burn, reaction or water-damage claims raise it, and a repeat escape-of-water claim raises it the most.
- Coverage limits and deductiblesHigher limits cost more, and a higher deductible lowers the premium but raises your share of the loss.
- Your Calgary locationYour neighbourhood, the building you occupy, and the local exposures Calgary sees factor into the property side of your premium.
Common Questions
Questions ownersreally ask.
Does general liability cover a colour or bleach burn?
Usually not on its own. General liability is built for accidents to third parties, like a client slipping on a wet floor. Harm caused by the service you performed, meaning a scalp burn, a reaction to colour, or hair that breaks off after a bleach, falls to professional liability. Most hair salon programs need both, and a salon carrying only general liability is uncovered for the claim it is most likely to see.
A client wants a refund and the cost of fixing their hair. Is that insured?
It depends on the wording, and on what is being claimed. A physical injury from the service sits with professional liability. A pure demand for money back on the service is often treated differently, because it is a financial loss rather than an injury. This is one of the places where salon policies genuinely differ from one another, so it is worth asking before you buy rather than after the appointment.
I rent a chair. Am I covered by the salon’s policy?
Generally no. A salon owner’s policy protects the salon and the people it employs, not an independent stylist renting a chair. If you rent, you carry your own risk for the services you perform and the tools you own, so you need your own general and professional liability. Salon owners should ask for proof of it in the rental agreement, because a renter without coverage tends to become your claim.
The shampoo bowl flooded the unit below us. Whose insurance pays?
Yours is the first place it lands. Escape of water from your plumbing that damages another tenant’s space is a liability claim against your business, and the damage to your own floors, stock and improvements is a property claim. Both are normal parts of a salon program, and it is the reason we ask about the age of the back bar plumbing when we place one.
Are my stylists’ own tools covered?
Only if the policy is written to include them. A good set of shears is worth more than most people assume, and tools owned personally by an employee or a chair renter sit outside the salon’s contents coverage by default. Tell us what is in the drawers and we will set the limit so a break-in does not turn into a payroll conversation.
How much does hair salon insurance cost in Calgary?
There is no flat rate. Your premium depends on the work you do, your revenue, your Calgary location, and your claims history, and higher-risk work costs more to insure. We price it around how you operate rather than a one-size quote, and most hair salons go from first conversation to bound coverage within a few business days.
Is hail damage covered by commercial insurance in Calgary?
Hail damage to your building, signage, and outdoor property is typically covered under a commercial property policy, and hail damage to vehicles under comprehensive auto coverage. Because Calgary is one of Canada’s highest-hail cities, insurers pay close attention to roof age and construction, and replacement-cost coverage is worth confirming.
Do I need flood coverage for my Calgary business?
Overland flood and sewer backup are usually endorsements added to a commercial property policy rather than automatic inclusions. Given Calgary’s flood history, especially near the rivers, it is worth reviewing whether your location warrants them and whether your business-interruption coverage would respond to a flood closure.
What coverage do most Calgary businesses carry?
Most start with replacement-cost commercial property and commercial general liability, then add comprehensive auto for hail, water endorsements where the location calls for it, and business interruption. The rest depends on the trade: tools and equipment for contractors, crime and cyber for retailers and offices, loss of rental income for landlords.
